John Lowry. BSc., CEng., MA. Fine Art.
John studied art at Harrogate Art College and Leeds Metropolitan University
and is now a professional painter and teacher.
His preferred medium is pastel which is the most durable of the traditional painting media
and predates others such as oils and watercolours by literally thousands of years.
It can be used in a pale, subtle and sensitive way, but it can also be used to produce
pictures outstanding for their boldness and for their bright colours, equally suited to
realistic and to abstract painting.
John teaches landscape and abstraction, but he also teaches drawing and painting, in any of
the other opaque media - goache, acrylic or oil.
The courses are designed such that the beginner or more advanced painter can progress in
stages and, with time and dedication, can attain the level where their work will be hung in
exhibitions.
Teaching is either outdoors or in a relaxed workshop atmosphere where the exchange of ideas
between participants is encouraged, with tuition aimed at helping each individual artist -
whether new to painting or more experienced - to progress at their own pace.
The practical side of the painting courses constantly refers back to the basic principles and
to base skills and techniques, and is supported by a series of talks and group discussions
aimed at broadening the understanding of art and pulling the practical work into context.
